Saturday night boxing fans packed into the sold-out  “Storm House” in Salinas, as the Thompson Boxing Promotions series “New Blood” took center stage and showcased a plethora of local talent in the small Northern California farming community. The music rocked and the deafening crowd roared as undefeated prospect and hometown hero Ruben Villa IV (11-0, 4 KO’s) captured the WBO Youth Featherweight Title when he defeated the tough, heavy handed prospect Marlon Olea (13-3, 12 KO’s) of Barranquilla, Colombia in an eight round bout. Villa who was fighting for the first time as a professional in front of his home crowd, didn’t disappoint. Villa the southpaw wasted no time in establishing the distance and using a quick combinations to outbox his opponent. Throughout the eight round bout, Olea seemed content to just fight defensively and try to survive the aggressive assault from Villa as the electrified “Storm House” witnessed one sided domination from the opening to the closing bell.

After eight rounds of boxing, all three judges returned with the score of 80-72 in favor of Villa. After the bout Villa stated “I didn’t really want to knock him out, I just wanted to put together the best performance of my career. I boxed patient but also wanted to hit him and let him know I was ready to fight if that’s what he wanted to do.” Villa went on to say “Tonight I came away with a title, and I was happy to do it in front of my hometown and my family.” Villa who is one of the bright stars in the Thompson stable is managed by Danny Zamora of Santa Fe Springs California.

Also on the card was previously undefeated Nor-Cal prospect Brandon Trejo (3-1, 1 KO) from Napa, California has entered the ring against a very tough opponent in Bogar Padilla (1-1) from Ensenada, Mexico in a scheduled four round lightweight bout. From the opening bell, neither fighter took a step back as heavy exchanges flew in the center of the ring. As the first round came to an end Padilla caught Trejo with a swift right hook that dropped Trejo. Trejo beat the count and seemed to use that knockdown as fuel to battle back in a closely contested fight, but after four rounds the judges returned with the scores of  38-37 and 39-36 (twice) giving Padilla the unanimous decision victory. After the bout Trejo stated “I got caught and it surprised me, and in a four round fight I knew that knockdown would weigh heavy on the cards and I would have probably needed a knockout to win. I’ll use this match as a learning experience and I’ll definitely be back even stronger.”
