Kamaru Usman might’ve picked up a huge win at UFC Chile at the expense of Demian Maia. But apparently, the Nigerian Nightmare apparently paid a big price for the victory.

Usman secured the win via a unanimous decision after a solid five-round performance against Maia and kept his impressive winning streak intact. In a post-fight interview, Usman noted that he broke both his hands in the fight.

”No excuses. But I think I broke my right hand in the second. I wasn’t letting it go as much and then I broke my left one in the third. It’s just to let everyone know,” he said during the octagon interview after the fight. (via MMA Mania)

Usman then went on to elaborate on the injury in another post-fight interview which happened backstage.

”I threw a straight, straight down the middle. I hurt my hand previously, right before that, but I threw it anyways right down the middle and when I threw it and I dropped him I felt it crunch again, I was like f**k. I could try to finish him right now but we still got more rounds to go,” he added.

Future plans

Usman has already made it clear on what he wants next. He asked for either a shot at Tyron Woodley or the winner of Stephen Thompson vs. Darren Till which will main event UFC Liverpool in a couple of weeks. Woodley, currently recovering from a shoulder injury, could only return in August. Interestingly, Usman also has a well-known friction with Colby Covington. Covington will fight Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 225 soon for the Interim Welterweight championship as well.

With the win over Maia, Usman improved his record to 13-1 while keeping his undefeated run in the UFC intact. He is now 8-0 in the promotion after making his debut back in 2015 against Hayder Hassan.
