The UFC is close to finalizing a heavyweight fight between Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov for UFC 229 on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White told ESPN.
Lewis is ranked #2 in the world and is riding on a two-fight win streak with him recently beating Francis Ngannou in a lackluster performance at UFC 226 last month. Lewis apologized for his performance immediately after. He also admitted to suffering from a back injury prior to the bout.
Russian fighter Volkov is on a six-fight winning streak and looks to be headlining with comrade Khabib. “Drago” is coming off a 4th round KO over former Champ Fabricio Werdum at UFC London.
He defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum by fourth-round knockout in his most recent contest at UFC Fight Night 127 in March.
The UFC 229 lineup now includes:
- Champ Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor – for the lightweight title
- Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov
- Jussier Formiga vs. Sergio Pettis
- Yana Kunitskaya vs. Lina Lansberg
