Our Friday Fighter of this week is rising Indian MMA Star Roshan Mainam Luwang. He holds a professional MMA record of 6-2-0 with his last win coming via first-round submission against Aziz Calim at ONE Championship on 19th March 2021. Roshan is currently a part of EVOLVE MMA Fight Team based out of Singapore which was founded by ONE championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

The Evolve team had held tryouts back in November which attracted hundreds of application. From this, only six fighters were selected to be part of the EVOLVE Fight team including Roshan. He is the first-ever Indian fighter to be a part of the team.

What inspired Roshan Mainam?

Roshan Mainam Luwang, who hails from Manipur, has been a 4 time Delhi State Wrestling Champion. Roshan Mainam, who improved his professional record to 4-2, was inspired by district-mate Sarita Devi’s 2006 world boxing title and Sushil Kumar’s Olympic bronze two years later. He’s a member of the Guru Hanuman Akhara and works as a wrestling instructor at Singapore’s famous Evolve MMA. Roshan is currently ranked 14th out of 149 active Asia South Pro Bantamweights.

Roshan made his pro MMA debut in JSJ Fight league against Xico ZorinMawiia where he secured a second round submission win at JSJ Fight League 3 on Nov 5th 2016. His second outing came against arguably one of the best Indian MMA fighter Kantharaj Agasa which he lost. Roshan went on to get a couple of more impressive wins against Pramod Kataria and Ateet Kelvin Gupta with both fights ending in a first round finish which led to a rematch against Kantharaj Agasa. Agasa went on to win the rematch but Roshan’s performance caught the attention of the Indian MMA fans and his performance gained him praise from everyone

In one of his earlier Roshan’s interviews with us at MMAIndia.com, he talked about his fights with Agasa. “EVERYONE KNOWS HOW GOOD KANTHARAJ IS. HE IS A GREAT AND EXPERIENCED FIGHTER. I COULD’VE FOUGHT A DIFFERENT FIGHTER TO MAKE UP MY RECORD BUT THAT DOESN’T GIVE ME ANYTHING. SO, FIGHTING SOMEONE LIKE KANTHARAJ WILL ONLY BENEFIT ME. AT THE SAME TIME, I DIDN’T HAVE THE FEAR IN MY HEART, I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR WAYS TO WIN,” he added

Roshan Mainam’s dream is to add one more entry to this dream journey, to become India’s first MMA world champion. Roshan’s longtime coach coach Vishal Seigell believes Roshan has what it takes to be a world champion. “He is humble, receptive with no ego and I am very confident of his ability to stick to the plan and work hard.”

Meanwhile, flyweight sensation Roshan “The Indian Notorious” Mainam will take on compatriot Gurdarshan “Saint Lion” Mangat in a catchweight mixed martial arts affair. Mainam has racked up three straight submission victories in ONE, while Mangat will try to bounce back after losing his last outing.
