Former Olympic medallist and UFC 221 main-event star Yoel “The Soldier of God” Romero missed weight at the official weigh-ins at UFC 221. The were no early weigh-ins for the event. The official and ceremonial weigh-ins were both the same for the PPV and took place in the UFC host hotel at Perth, Australia.

UFC 221 had a main-event scheduled to take place between Robert Whittaker and Luke Rockhold for Whittaker’s middleweight title. However, after Whittaker pulled out due to an injury, Romero stepped in to face Rockhold at a relatively short notice to fight Rockhold for the interim belt.

In his first weigh-in attempt, Romero stepped on the scale at 188.7 pounds. He was then given two hours to make the weight. Though, his attempts to make weight failed and in his second attempt he managed to lose only a single pound. He weighed in at 187.7 pounds in his final attempt. Hence, Romero won’t be eligible to win the interim title even if he manages to get a victory on Sunday.

The middleweights had an intense stare-down post weigh-in and talked a lot of trash. Romero’s trash talk was slammed by Michael Bisping who is serving as an analyst for Fox Sports: UFC. Here’s what Bisping had to say:

“I have no idea why Yoel is talking so much trash right now, He should be ashamed of himself. He should be totally ashamed. You have to come in on weight.”

Romero was in training camp already to fight David Branch. Four weeks too is relatively enough time to make weight. Hence, Romero can have no excuses for his failed weigh-in attempt.
