Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier will clash with each other in a rematch at UFC 257 pay-per-view card on Jan 23.

The venue hasn’t been revealed yet but multiple sources revealed that it could take place at the Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. The fight was first reported by The MacLife and later confirmed by Ariel Helwani of ESPN.

This fight could have serious title implications as UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has retired from the sport and the belt will soon be vacant and the winner of the UFC 257 main event could very well fight for the vacant title.

Dustin Poirier had signed the contract last week, whereas Conor McGregor signed the contract earlier today.

Conor McGregor has signed his bout agreement to fight Dustin Poirier on Jan. 23, per McGregor. Poirier signed last week. The rematch is officially on.” Ariel Helwani tweeted.

Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 2 could take place at Fight Island

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier previously fought at UFC 178 back in September 2014 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. In that fight, McGregor knocked out Poirier in just a minute and a half into the first round.

Conor McGregor fought earlier this year in January at UFC 246 against Donald Cerrone. In that fight, he knocked out Cerrone in just 40-seconds. Although he was scheduled to fight three times in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic forced the sporting world to return without any spectator and in such a case, McGregor couldn’t be bought back as he generates millions in gate revenue for the promotion.

This resulted in frustrated Conor McGregor retiring from the sport in June. Dustin Poirier is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Dan Hooker in June earlier this year.

The rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier could take place at the Fight Island in Abu Dhabi according to UFC president Dana White.

January 23 on Fight Island, if everything goes according to plans. There are a ton of ‘ifs’ right now. I have to see where the world is at in the next couple of months.” Dana White said to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Fight Island has hosted some of the biggest fights of the year including the blockbuster UFC 251 card that sold 1.3 Million PPVs in July earlier this year. Fight Island also featured UFC 253 and UFC 254.
