Israel Adesanya wants the Superfight with Jones : “It’s still part of my plan”

Adesanya Jones

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya still wants to fight Jon Jones, though Jones has now decided to move up to the heavyweight division.

Adesanya is getting ready for his Middleweight Championship fight against Paulo Costa at the end of the month, but it doesn’t mean Adesanya has forgotten about the months of back and forth jabs between him and former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Dominant champions always take center stage in fantasy matchmaking, and with so many of them trying out new weight classes, the possibility of this fight happening maybe in the future can’t be overlooked.

Jon Jones is gaining up weight for his heavyweight debut soon, he recently vacated the light-heavyweight title and announced that he is planning to move up. But Adesanya believes he has a lot of work to do before he starts to consider the possibility of a fight with Jones. Adesanya (19-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) doesn’t have a timeline for when he’d like to face Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC), but he’s still very much interested in the matchup.

“I still have that in mind, it’s still part of my plan,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie at a virtual press conference Thursday promoting his title defense against Paulo Costa at UFC 253. “But let me ask you this, how many years has Jon Jones been in the UFC? And he only just moved up in weight, right?

“So why would he or anyone else expect me to move up in weight when I just got the belt rather than defend my belt like he has and create a legacy before jumping up in weight? So I’m sticking to my plan. I’m never going to let anyone make me fold or make me make a move ahead of schedule. I’m sticking to my plan.”

Adesanya talks about his opponent Paulo Costa

“He’s dumb,” Adesanya said of his opponent on ESPN. “He’s dumb and he walks forward and he throws shots. That’s what makes it exciting, and that’s what I’m looking forward to. I’m looking forward to this big, inflated ignoramus, running up on me, trying to throw shots as I keep moving and sticking him.”

“As I said, he’s dumb,” Adesanya added. “But that’s what makes him dangerous, as well, because he’s not scared to walk forward and just throw, and he’s strong. But the same thing happens when they step in the cage with me. When they see me, they feel me. They say, ‘Oh my God – he’s a lot stronger than I thought. Oh my God – he’s a lot bigger than I thought.’”

It’s doubtful if the super fight between Adesanya and the former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will ever take place and if it does then what will be the outcome, but for now, fans will get a highly awaited middleweight title bout between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa. The two will square off in the main event of UFC 253 on Sept. 26. The event will go down on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It will also have a co-main event fight for the vacant light-heavyweight championship between Dominick Reyes and Jan Błachowicz.
