Big Ben is back!
UFC veteran and former top ranked heavyweight Ben Rothwell (36-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC) will be returning after a two and a half year of inactivity against former WSOF champ Blagoy Ivanov in March.
Werdum was slated to fight former champ Fabricio Werdum at UFC 203 in September 2016 however Rothwell pulled out citing a knee injury. The bout was rescheduled for UFC 211 in May 2017, only to be canceled when Rothwell failed an out-of-competition drug test administered by USADA.
Rothwell claimed that his positive test has resulted from his physician’s prescription of testosterone. Rothwell’s medical reports stated that testosterone has been prescribed and administered to him by his physician. Although Rothwell’s use of testosterone was under the supervision of a physician, according to USADA’s norms Rothwell failed to meet the criteria to obtain a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) to authorize his usage of prohibited anabolic agent. Rothwell’s two-year period of ineligibility will end of February 6.
Rothwell (36-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC) last fought against former Heavyweights champion Junior Does Santos. He lost the fight via unanimous decision. Before this setback, Rothwell looked unstoppable with a four fight win streak against notable names in Brandon Vera, title challenger Alistair Overeem, Matt Mitrione and former champ Josh Barnett. He became the first fighter ever to submit Barnett.
MMA community will be looking forward to his crafty gogo chokes and scary post-fight interviews.
Ivanov (16-2-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on the other hand, is coming of a unanimous decision loss against Junior Dos Santos as well at Fight Night 133 back in July last year.
