Is Tony Ferguson getting together with a former adversary he initially looked at ten years ago?
Ferguson’s triumph in combat sports, his first since 2019, garnered media attention this past Saturday. “El Cucuy” made the switch to the sweet science when his time in the UFC ended, facing Salt Papi at Misfits Boxing 22. Ferguson defeated Salt Papi via TKO in the third round to earn the MFB interim middleweight title.
On an episode of the “Weighing In” podcast, Josh Thomson discussed the possibility of facing Ferguson inside the boxing ring (h/t Bloody Elbow).
“I mean, yeah. Possibly,” Thomson said. “It’s boxing. I think people should understand that boxing, it’s a lot easier to train. It’s so different. It’s just a lot easier to train for. A lot of jumping rope, a lot of bag work, a lot of running, it’s a lot of road work…”
In 2015, Ferguson and Thomson faced off in a UFC match. The fight was decided unanimously in favor of “El Cucuy.” Thomson has acknowledged that the battle was difficult and that it served as a wake-up call for him.
Ten years hence, Thomson might be persuaded to try his hand at boxing against an old rival.
“Maybe that’s a conversation we have,” Thomson said. “I have a relationship with Misfits Boxing. There’s been some conversations anyways with them about other fights, but, ultimately, it really just comes down to the cream rises to the top and who do I wanna fight [and] if we can get the pay right…”
Since being knocked out by Patricky “Pitbull” Freire in February 2017, Thomson has not participated in prizefighting. Early in 2020, he made his retirement official. Even though “The Answer” will be competing under bare-knuckle regulations, fight fans have witnessed fighters like Frankie Edgar halt their combat sports retirement in favor of the sweet science.
