After watching his father battle a myriad of sicknesses, “The Indian Notorious” Roshan Mainam promised himself he’d pick a career that would keep him healthy and happy.

And he’s found it – mixed martial arts.

“The Indian Notorious” will test his skills in the all-encompassing sport once again at ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES this Friday, 9 October, against Liu Peng Shuai.

“My father had asthma for a very long time, and he was on medication for several years,” Mainam said.

“He used to drink a lot too. Around 2012 to 2013 his health deteriorated. His liver got infected, and he had some heart and kidney problems as well.

“At one point, we thought that he might not survive.”

Amid those struggles, the Mainam family united and did what they could for their patriarch. “The Indian Notorious” found work to pay medical bills, while his mother stayed back in the village, worked at a mill, and cared for the family’s head.

“Fortunately, because of all this, we saved his life,” Roshan Mainam added.

Even better, the rough times didn’t occur in vain, as Mainam soon realized that he needed to avoid ending up in a similar position.

“[My father’s] health taught me that I have to be strong and needed to do something in life,” he said.

So, the talented athlete took up wrestling as a way to stay healthy and active. The endeavour proved successful, as he went on to become an Indian Wrestling Champion.

“When I was winning medals in sports, [my father] used to be extremely happy with my talent,” Mainam said. “He hoped that [because of my talent], I’d get a very good job one day.”

Roshan Mainam did get a good job, but it wasn’t the type his father envisioned. Instead, he continued on with combat sports, turned professional in mixed martial arts, and began competing in India, where he went 3-2.

The big moment occurred when he attended Evolve MMA’s 2018 global tryouts. Roshan Mainam wound up impressing the gym and earned himself a spot on the team.

Roshan Mainam is the first fighter from NE India to sign with ONE Championship

One year later, he made his ONE Championship debut at ONE: MASTERS OF FATE and beat Khon Sichan via first-round submission.

“Now that I have this opportunity to train at Evolve, I get lots of respect at my village because I am the only person from Northeast India to be a part of ONE Championship,” he said.

“Whenever I visit my hometown, they welcome me with open arms. They take pride in me and I want to make them feel proud.”

There’s no doubt that Mainam’s father is feeling proud as well.

Catch Roshan Mainam in action this Friday at ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES on the ONE Super App, or on Hotstar or Star Sports Select at 6 p.m. India Standard Time (IST).
