Anthony Smith and Zhang Mingyang squared off in a light heavyweight match as the co-headliner of tonight’s UFC Kansas City event.
This evening in Missouri, Smith (38-22 MMA) was participating in his farewell fight. “Lionheart” went into his retirement bout hoping to end a losing streak of two fights. Prior to being knocked out by Dominick Reyes at UFC 310, the 36-year-old lost to Roman Dolidze via unanimous decision in June of last year.
Zhang Mingyang (19-6 MMA) had won eleven straight fights going into tonight’s match, with his two most recent triumphs occurring inside the Octagon. In his most recent fight, the Chinese sensation defeated Ozzy Diaz via first-round knockout in November of last year.
Anthony Smith did not give the final performance that many fans were looking for during tonight’s UFC Kansas City co-main event. After splitting “Lionheart” open with a standing elbow, Zhang Mingyang wasted no time in completing the fight with some heavy ground and pound on the canvas. He was able to land some good strikes early and often. Smith displayed the bravery and heart that made him renowned one final time in spite of the loss in the first round.
