UFC: Jose Aldo wants the title this year so he can take 2020 off

Former two-time featherweight champion and MMA legend Josè Aldo has turned the clocks in his last two fights.

Aldo is coming off two back to back knockout victories against veteran Jeremy Stephens and prospect Renato Moicano. Aldo however wants to carry on with that form not only to become the champion but extend it up to 2021. Despite claiming earlier that he would fight thrice in 2019 and retire, Aldo revealed that he would like to get his hands on the belt in 2019, take 2020 off and then return back thereafter.

“It will all depend on this year,” Aldo told MMA Junkie. “I think I’m giving it my all this year so I can get the new title shot and who knows. I don’t know about 2020, because I want to take one year to not do anything. Like a sabbatical, so I can just enjoy life a bit and maybe return. So I don’t know about 2020, but 2021 it could be.”

Aldo will take on surging featherweight Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 237 this weekend. Volkanovski is currently riding a 16-fight winning streak including six in the UFC, hence taking him out certainly won’t be easy for Aldo.
