The Brazilian fighter, who transitioned from kickboxing to MMA, expressed his interest in moving up to the heavyweight division for a potential super fight with Jones. However, there’s one major obstacle: getting the UFC’s approval.

During a UFC 301 fight week in Rio de Janeiro, Pereira received notifications about Jones’ tweets proposing a matchup between the two champions. Pereira admitted that he was surprised by the sudden attention but felt honored by Jones’ respectful message. The idea of facing Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history, certainly caught Pereira’s attention.

Alex Pereira has already made history by winning UFC titles in two weight classes: middleweight and light heavyweight. Now, he has his eyes set on an unprecedented third divisional championship. His move to heavyweight would be a bold step, but it’s one he’s willing to take. However, the UFC’s initial lack of interest in the idea prompted Pereira to focus on defending his light heavyweight title.
Despite the initial reluctance from the promotion, Alex Pereira believes that the potential super fight with Jones could change their minds. He stated, “If the UFC wants to tell me, ‘Hey, this is the path for you to get that fight at heavyweight,’ so I can change my plans, that works. But if I don’t have anything, I prefer not to stray away from what we have decided.” Pereira is ready to prepare for the challenge if given the green light.
Jon Jones’ Perspective
Jones, currently recovering from injuries, sees the matchup with Alex Pereira as “the biggest fight in MMA history.” He recognizes the marketing potential of pitting two champions against each other, especially when one is aiming for a title in his third different weight class. While Jones is focused on his pending showdown with Stipe Miocic, he’s clearly intrigued by the idea of facing Pereira.
