New flyweight champion Alexa Grasso is ready to rematch the former flyweight champion of the world Valentina Shevchenko after she defeated her in the co-main event of UFC 285.
The newly crowned UFC women’s flyweight champion, who defeated Shevchenko on Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 285, is willing to face her again. With a rear-naked choke in the fourth round, Grasso (16-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) defeated Shevchenko (23-4 MMA, 12-3 UFC) to win the championship.
One of the UFC champions with the longest reigns was Shevchenko. Prior to UFC 285, she had defended her championship seven times in a row. Shevchenko’s reign as champion has led to Grasso saying she would be OK facing her again.
“Of course – she was so dominant in the division,” Alexa Grasso told reporters at the UFC 285 post-fight news conference. “Of course we can do this again.”
Shevchenko may have made a mistake that some have attributed to Grasso’s finish, but the Mexican contestant said that Shevchenko had planned her strategy around that particular sequence.
“We knew that she was going to spin, and it was easier to take the back from that position, so I was just waiting for that moment,” Alexa Grasso said. “I was hoping that she would spin. It happened in the (Joanne Wood fight), and I knew that I was able and easier to get the back on that moment, so I was just waiting for the opportunity.”
