After UFC 226, Daniel Cormier has the privilege of wrapping himself in two UFC belts, giving him the freedom to chose, which one he wants to defend first and which one he wants to keep on hold. Judging by whatever followed in the post fight ceremony in the Octagon, its seems preety evident that Cormier will square off against Brock Lesnar after the latter is done with his formalities with USADA. So that implies DC may have his last fight at light heavyweight anytime soon. That also means that the winner of the upcoming fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Volkan Oezdemir will be left with nothing after the matchup, provided UFC doesn’t decides to spice things up at 205 pounds.
“They should do this fight for the interim title, it’s the No. 1 guy vs. the No. 2 guy,” Gustafsson told The MMA Hour. “If ‘DC’ makes up his mind and wants to come down, we can fight for the real title. He better let that belt go, he can’t sit on his throne and decide who’s fighting and who’s not. When I beat Volkan I’ll be the number one guy and the next fight is for the belt, that’s it.” Cormier has defeated both these men earlier. He made an easy work of Oezdemir in January, defeating him by a second round TKO. Gustafsson, however gave Cormier a run for his money when the two met at UFC 192 back in 2015. DC was able to squeeze his way to a split decision victory. The UFC has made nothing official about “The Mauler’s” next fight, though. However, even if it does, it wouldn’t be the first time that UFC is handing down belts.
