Alexander Volkanovski held onto his UFC Featherweight throne after marking his third successful title defense against Chan Sung Jung aka “The Korean Zombie” in the main event of UFC 273 in Florida last weekend and says that the Korean fighter has truly lived up to his “Zombie” moniker.

My hands were hurting: Alexander Volkanovski on striking The “Zombie”

One of the senior-most fighters on the current UFC roster, The Korean Zombie has performing in the Octagon for more than a decade, and the two-time Featherweight contender’s ability to absorb heavy strikes and continue moving forward has earned him the “Zombie” nickname.

Volkanovski, on the other hand, put up his featherweight belt on the line for the third time against Jung, having defeated Max Holloway and Brian Ortega in his first two. The bout, which ended with a 4th round TKO victory for the Aussie, was mostly a one-sided affair with Volkanovski outstriking Jung by a 138-to-48 margin before the 4th round TKO.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Volkanovski revealed that while he was satisfied with the stoppage, he wished for an earlier finish, adding that Jung was tough in the cage and fulfilled his nickname.

“I was obviously happy with the finish. I wanted it a little bit earlier, but we ended up getting it. He was tough, man. He ate some shots, he really did. Obviously he lived up to that Zombie name. My hands were hurting. I remember landing jabs and punches and my hands were hurting, that’s how clean they were hitting. They were hitting flush, and he would be wobbled and rocked and just come straight back to it, and I’d just do it again,” said Volkanovski.

“I probably rocked him like five, six times in there, maybe more. By the end of it, I’m glad Herb stopped it, because I felt like he definitely had enough. I think he was ready. He sort of knew it was over. He was defeated already, let’s get him back home to the family healthy,” he added. [H/T]
