Heavyweight mixed martial arts star Alistair Overeem will soon be making his debut in professional wrestling against former WWE superstar Braun Strowman, despite not really having high regard for what the sport has become, as the Dutchman had earlier termed modern pro wrestling as “gay, lame, bad acting”.
Alistair Overeem to make pro wrestling debut on 4th June but doesn’t have high regard for the sport
After his release from the UFC back in March 2021, a month after making his last appearance in the Octagon against Alexander Volkov at UFC Vegas 18 and losing the bout via TKO, the former Strikeforce and DREAM heavyweight champion signed a deal with Glory kickboxing in June.
However, “The Demolition Man” is set to make his debut as a pro grappler in the inaugural Wrestling Entertainment Series (WES) event, set to take place on 4th June in Nottingham, England, and on his debut, Overeem will lock horns against Adam Scherr aka Braun Strowman, the former one-time Universal Champion, a one-time Intercontinental Champion, and a two-time Raw Tag Team Champion in WWE.
Even though he’s ready to have his inauguration in pro wrestling, Overeem revealed to The MMA Hour back in August last year that he has not been following the sport in over three decades and in recent times, finds the sport lame, stupid, and filled with bad acting.
“The thing is with that whole wrestling thing, I watched it when I was 8, 9, 10 years old,” said Overeem, “Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, huge fan of those guys. Honky Tonk Man. Great, funny. Andre The Giant. I stopped watching after that, so I’m not watching since [1992, 1993, 1994]. And just recently, I started looking again on YouTube, and oh my God, this stuff is lame. It’s just lame what these guys are doing. It’s fake. It’s lame. It’s stupid. It’s gay. It doesn’t make any sense…”
“It’s lame,” the 42-year-old went on, “It’s not even a sport. It’s just lame. It’s bad acting. It’s just lame. Sorry for all the fans of WWE, but I’m just being honest. I’m just giving my opinion. Free country, right? I think it’s lame, and because I hadn’t seen it for 20 years. I never watched Brock fight. I never watched CM Punk fight. I knew they were from WWE.” [H/T MMA Fighting]
