Alistair Overeem says he’s probably got 2 more years left to fight before retirement

Alistair Overeem

Alistair Overeem made his MMA debut over 20 years ago against Ricardo Fyeet in October of 1999 and he won the fight via submission in the first round. On December 7, when he fights Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC DC, he would have fought for 63rd time. Overall, it will be his 91st fight when Kickboxing is also bought into consideration.

The 39-year old dutch heavyweight is one of the most active fighters in the world. He has won eight of his last twelve bouts and is currently riding on a two-fight winning streak. However, a human body can only endure so much and in a recent interview, The Demolition Man has given a timeline of his retirement.

Speaking to the media at UFC on ESPN 7 open workouts, the former  Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, DREAM Heavyweight Champion, K-1 World Grand Prix Champion revealed that he has two more years left in him before retirement.

You have to be realistic,” Overeem said. “For me, two years (left fighting). Maybe a little bit more, maybe less. Probably a little bit more. But then it’s going to be enough. But I do believe you have to stop on time. It is a dangerous profession. We’ve been fighting for 23 years. Twenty-three years ago was the first fight, so with that also we need to be clever.”

Despite such a long fighting career, he has never won a UFC title and he made it clear that his fighting career would not be complete without winning a UFC heavyweight championship.

My career would not be complete without UFC gold,” Overeem said. “I just need to win my fights. If you win Saturday, I’ll probably have to do one more win then we can make noise for a title shot.” (H/T – MMA Junkie)

Rozenstruik made his UFC debut earlier this year at UFC Fight Night 144, where he knocked out Junior Albini in the second round. His last fight took place at UFC 244 against Jairzinho Rozenstruik where he knocked out the Russian in just 29 seconds. He is so far 3-0 in the UFC.

Do you guys think that Overeem will win the UFC gold?
