Alistair Overeem, the GLORY kickboxer and former UFC heavyweight fighter is in the talks to head over to ONE Championship to participate in the upcoming recently announced openweight Muay Thai Grand Prix tournament.

Alistair Overeem reaches out to ONE officials

Overeem, a former UFC heavyweight title contender, parted ways with the promotion following his loss to Alexander Volkov in 2021. While there were other promotions stepping up to rope in the Dutchman, there was little interest from Overeem to continue MMA and in a switch-up, joined GLORY kickboxing.

However, “The Demolition Man” could soon be seen back in the cage, as there have been conversations to include him as part of the 16-fighter roster for the upcoming ONE Muay Thai Grand Prix tournament.

“I would like to announce the greatest grand prix in the history of the sport of Muay Thai,” ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong said during the initial press conference. “One million U.S. dollars. Sixteen of the best strikers in the world will descend this year for one million U.S. dollars. Fans all over the world, tell me who you want to see.”

“This is an open-weight grand prix,” Sityodtong went on, “This is going to blow up. You’re going to see big guys against small guys, and it’s going to be huge.” [H/T BJPenn.com]

While there are no announced fighter for the tournament, as per latest reports from South China Morning Post, Overeem has been in contact with ONE officials to compete in the Muay Thai GP.

“Alistair Overeem has reached out to ONE Championship officials about being included in the promotion’s US$1 million openweight Muay Thai grand prix, an anonymous source told the Post,” SCMP reported.

Overeem made his GLORY debut in October last year, and earned a unanimous decision victory over longterm rival Badr Hari in their trilogy at Glory: Collision 4. However, Overeem failed a dope test following the bout, putting his next outing on hold.
