In a recent interview, former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling shared his thoughts on whether Henry Cejudo, a former two-division UFC champion, would ever cut weight to move back down to the flyweight division (125 pounds). This topic arose during Sterling’s conversation with MMA journalist Helen Yee, ahead of his upcoming bout with Movsar Evloev at UFC 307.
Aljamain Sterling on Henry Cejudo’s Potential Return to Flyweight
Sterling, who has recently moved up to the featherweight division, expressed skepticism about Cejudo’s ability to make the cut to flyweight again. He highlighted the challenges associated with such a weight cut, especially considering Cejudo’s age and the discipline required. Sterling remarked, “That’s a tough one. I just don’t know if Henry has the discipline to get back down to 125. It’s not easy. He’s older. He’s older than me. I’m 35, and the thought of me cutting back down to 135… I don’t even know how I did that for this long but I toughed it out mentally. But if you tell me I had to do it again, I’m probably just not gonna do it”.
Henry Cejudo, known as “Triple C” for his achievements in wrestling and MMA, initially made his mark in the flyweight division by defeating Demetrious Johnson, widely regarded as the greatest flyweight of all time, to capture the title in 2018. However, Sterling questioned what Henry Cejudo would look like at flyweight at this stage in his career, noting the speed and agility required to compete in the division.
Sterling’s comments provide a realistic perspective on the physical and mental demands of cutting weight, especially for older fighters. While a return to flyweight for Cejudo could bring excitement to the division, it remains uncertain whether he can overcome the significant hurdles involved.
