Petr Yan became the UFC bantamweight champion after defeating Jose Aldo for the vacant UFC bantamweight championship. Petr Yan was anticipated to make his first title defense against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 256. However, it was announced in November that the bout was canceled from the UFC 256 card and the bout was rescheduled for March 6, 2021, at UFC 259.
The fight was going pretty well for Yan as he was dominating Aljamain Sterling for the majority of the fight. But just because of a piece of wrong advice from corner Yan had to lose his belt. He landed an illegal knee on the head of Sterling which resulted in disqualification. Aljamain Sterling became the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship by disqualification.
A rematch with Aljamain Sterling was expected to take place on October 30, 2021, at UFC 267. But unfortunately Sterling withdrew from the contest due to lingering neck issues. Cory Sandhagen stepped in as a late replacement and then the fight was made for the Interim UFC Bantamweight Championship. Yan won the bout via unanimous decision as he dominated Sandhagen who left his all in the ring that day as the duo had some amazing exchanges in the octagon.
UFC 272 card will be headlined by the featherweight title fight between the champion Alexander Volkanovski and former champion Max Holloway.
