Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and the current UFC featherweight champion Amanda Nunes has shockingly left her team. Amanda Nunes recently lost her bantamweight title against then top contender Julianna Pena. Amanda Nunes was expected to defend her bantamweight title at UFC 265 against Julianna Pena. But unfortunately, Nunes tested positive for COVID-19 on July 29 and the fight was canceled. The fight was rescheduled and eventually took place at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021. Nunes has some success on the feet and the ground in the first round of the fight but eventually, she sharted to fade away. Pena picked up the pace and ended up rocking Nunes and then took her back and submitted her via rear-naked choke. This is considered one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

“Interesting tidbit for anyone that didn’t know…Amanda Nunes left MMA Masters when she lost to Cat Zingano and joined ATT. She finally lost at ATT and is now leaving to start her own gym.”

Dana White on Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena Rematch

“Yes. It’s a big rematch if she wants it.”

“It’s up there with [Matt] Serra and Georges St. Pierre,” White said about the magnitude of Nunes’s upset loss to Pena. “Julianna is a person who always believed in herself and believed that she could win this fight if she got it. You heard it at the press conference, you heard it in the months leading up to this fight — and she did it. She did it tonight. That’s one of the things that makes this sport so incredible.”

When somebody’s that big of an underdog — I mean how many times have we been at these events where, when the fights are over, everybody’s looking at each other like ‘holy sh*t.’ It happens all the time here. It’s literally what makes this sport so incredible.”

“You guys think I’m going to go out unbalanced,” Nunes wrote on Instagram. “I undoubtedly accept the rematch. Give me a little time to get my shit together and I will be back better than ever.”

Amanda Nunes after losing the fight to Pena had expressed her interest in an immediate rematch. After Dana White agreed to it, all eyes were on Pena who was not intimated by the thought of light Nunes again and accepted the rematch fight willingly.

“We can do it next; I’m free next month, two months from now – whenever they want to do it, I’m ready,” Pena said. “If she wants to do a rematch, we can do a rematch,” Julianna Pena said.
