Amanda Nunes says featherweight division is not being cut from the UFC

UFC featherweight and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes put an end to all speculations regarding the end of the Women’s Featherweight division.

The former featherweight title contender Megan Anderson is no longer under contract with the UFC after completing her deal following a loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 259.

UFC officials confirmed Anderson completed her contract with the promotion. During a live stream on Twitch, Anderson confirmed her time with the UFC had come to an end, though she also said the promotion planned to dump the entire women’s featherweight division.

Multiple rumors were out that, UFC had plans to get rid of the featherweight division. After Nunes’ dominant win at UFC 259, UFC President Dana White stated the weight class would stay around as long as she wanted to defend the title at 145 pounds.

With the victory, Nunes defended her 145-pound title for the second time. She is also still in control of the 135-pound bantamweight title. She is one of only three champions in UFC history to defend titles in multiple weight classes, and she holds UFC records for the women’s divisions in wins (14), finishes (10), and wins in title fights (9).

Amanda Nunes  says the Division will go on

Following her successful seventh career title defense, Amanda Nunes appeared in jeopardy of losing a title. She now also disputes that notion.

“They did not cut the [featherweight] division,” Nunes told FanSided. “Dana [White] and I have a great relationship, as long as I want to defend it he will find me, opponents.”

Amanda Nunes said that her next defense will come back at her original home in the latter class. With Holly Holm injured out of her bout with Julianna Pena recently, Pena looks to be the most likely candidate to next face “The Lionness.”

“I see myself having my hand raised and retaining my belt,” Nunes said. “I will be working with a nutritionist and taking care of my body properly to have it working the way it needs to be.”

Shortly after Anderson spoke out, the UFC denied the claims and Spencer shared that she hadn’t heard anything yet. The next day back on her Twitch stream, Anderson told her followers in the chat not to speak of the news she shared as she “got in trouble” and wasn’t supposed to say anything. After the stream’s conclusion, she made a public post to her social media pages essentially summarizing all she had already said minus the part about featherweight disbanding.

“Regardless of what the UFC decides to do with the Women’s 145 division, there are plenty of options for me across the world to continue to do what I love,” she said.
