Andrei Arlovski confident of becoming UFC champion again

UFC heavyweight legend Andrei Arlovski says he is very much confident that he has what it takes to become a heavyweight champion again and would love to get his hand raised this Saturday.

The UFC Fight Night event has an amazing heavyweight battle on its way between Andrei Arlovski and Tom Aspinall. A heavyweight bout between contenders Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis will be headlining the Feb. 20 UFC event.

At the time of the fight, Arlovski (30-19 MMA, 19-13 UFC) will be 42 years old and look to extend his winning streak to three. He’s won three of his most recent four outings, which include wins over Ben Rothwell, Philipe Lins, and Tanner Boser. Arlovski, a former UFC champion who turns 42 in February, makes his 34th octagon appearance. He is currently on a two-fight win streak, with consecutive decision victories over Tanner Boser and Philipe Lins in 2020.

Aspinall (9-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has won both of his UFC outings by quick first-round knockouts. In his promotional debut, Aspinall defeated Jake Collier in 45 seconds before he defeated Alan Badout by ground-and-pound stoppage in 1:35 his next time out. The 27-year-old Englishman has won five straight fights by first-round KO/TKO and has never gone to a decision in 11 pro bouts.

Andrei Arlovski wants that belt again

For the former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, he says becoming champion again is driving him.

“I want to fight as long as possible and of course, I want to be a champion,” Arlovski said at media day. “That is why I’m doing what I’m doing right now. In the last two fights, I stuck to the gameplan and I trust my coaches 100 percent. Like Nike, just do it.”

Although Andrei Arlovski wants to become champion again, he says he won’t stick around if he becomes a punching bag. He reigned over the division back in 2005 and the 42-year-old has gone 4-5 and one no-contest in his last 10. However, his chin hasn’t been a major issue as of late which is why he has continued fighting.

“I don’t want to be a punching bag for some other fighters who will make some name, records off of me,” Arlovski said. “I have two kids, I’m a smart guy. I’m old and I want to see my grandsons and smoke cigars and drink some wine in my backyard.”

If Arlovski can get his hand raised on Saturday there is a good chance he gets a ranked opponent. If he is going to become a champion again, he will need to be active and string together some wins and work his way up the ranks.
