Andy Ruiz Jr shocked the world as he stopped Anthony Joshua in the sixth round to become the new WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. He also became the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion of the world.
Now, Joshua will be looking to rebound from this devastating loss and according to Anthony Joshua, he will be exercising his rematch clause as soon as possible, most likely in Cardiff in November or December – according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.
“I just have to turn it around a few notches and bring it back my way. I don’t want people to drown in their sorrows. This will show I have the power and strength. One hundred per cent I want the rematch,” he said.
“This is Andy’s night, congratulations champ,” Joshua said after the fight.
He then took the moment to thank the British boxing fans who travelled to attend Joshua’s fight in large number and apologised for letting them down.
“The vision remains the same. Thank you to everyone who travelled. Big respect to Andy, big big respect,” He added
“He’s a good fighter. Thank you, America. Thank you, everyone, for coming out this evening. Sorry I let my friends down, sorry I let my supporters down. There is no excuse. I got caught with a big shot, congratulations to him.” Joshua finally concluded.
