What initially started as a social media call out between Anthony Pettis and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson now seems to have high odds of converging into a fight. Pettis has spent his fighting career fighting at lightweight and featherweight. However, with things not going as expected for the former WEC and UFC lightweight champion Pettis has taunted a move to 170 pounds against perennial welterweight contender Stephen Thompson.
Wonderboy’s unorthodox karate background makes him one of the hardest mysteries to solve inside the Octagon. However, it has been done twice before by Tyron Woodley and standing in his corner both the times was coach Duke Roufus. Owing to that Roufus now believes he has the “playbook and experience” necessary for ‘Showtime’ to have if the two ever square off inside the Octagon.
Given Roufus’ experience with Woodley what can’t be overlooked is that Woodley and Pettis are poles apart stylistically. While one relies heavily on hard hitting and wrestling the other is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner of the highest order.
Pettis’ last visit to the Octagon resulted in “Fight of the year” candidate with him being on the losing end. Wonderboy also suffered a lost in his last fight against Darren Till. He was briefly linked in a fight with Robbie Lawler. However, the fight failed to materialize after the latter was matched up against Ben Askeren. With no fights planned ahead, Pettis has picked the perfect slot for calling out Thompson.
