Ben Askren calls Dustin ‘dumb’ for not taking the Tony Ferguson fight

Like many of us, Ben Askren was very disappointed to hear that a targeted lightweight fight between Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson has fallen apart. Earlier this month it was reported that the Ultimate Fighting Championship was looking to put on a fight between the former interim lightweight title holders in Poirier and Ferguson at UFC 254.

The fight was not officially been announced yet, although both players had verbally shown interest in the fight on social media. ESPN reported that Tony Ferguson has agreed to the fight, and the resistance is on Dustin’s side. Dustin stated that he will fight only if he is properly compensated.

I’m in,” Poirier told ESPN  “I just need to be compensated if they want this fight. Simple as that.” Since this will be a fight taken at a short notice for both fighters, it’s only fair that they are compensated duly for the risk they’re taking. “I’m a prizefighter and the prize needs to be right,” said Dustin.

He then later told ESPN that the negotiations didn’t work out: “UFC and I didn’t come to terms. I will not be fighting on Oct. 24.

To which Ben Askren replied :

Dumb, Poirier could’ve gained a ton by winning this fight. Gotta bet on the home team sometimes.

Poirier vs Ferguson: Battle of Beasts

It’d be a true shame if they don’t end up working this out. Dana White stated that this was a backup for the title fight on the card, in case anything should happen, and it’s pretty obviously a No. 1 contender fight.

With everything Poirier’s done in his career, from the wars he had with Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez twice, Justin Gaethje, Cub Swanson, Chan Sung Jung, Max Holloway, Dan Hooker, to everyone he’s knocked out, he deserves to be paid accordingly.

Poirier is the No. 2 contender for the lightweight belt, which is held by the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. Ferguson is No. 3.

The Poirier-Ferguson matchup was slated as the co-main event for UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, alongside a lightweight title unification bout between Khabib and interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje.

Ferguson, 36, is 25-4 with 12 knockouts and eight submissions. The former interim lightweight titleholder most recently lost his belt to Gaethje in a fifth-round TKO at UFC 249 last May. Before that bout, Ferguson had won 12 straight matches.
