Bambam Thounaojam, a 21-year-old from Manipur, had a triumphant outing in Russia when he became the first Indian Pro Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter to secure the World Champion Title Belt at the 15th World Cup MMA Championship.

He bagged the memorable win mere 27 seconds as Bambam defeated Marat Guseynov of Russia. He put his impressive skills and prowess on display. However, this achievement comes from sheer determination.

Bambam Thounaojam’s participation was up in the air

In an interview with Northeast Live TV, Bambam’s mother Thounaojam Ebemcha who sells fish to make a living, revealed her initial concerns about financing her son’s participation due to the financial crisis.

She stated that she was not able to give him Rs 30,000 for participating in the World Cup event in Russia. Finally, she borrowed the amount from a relative.

She said, “I was not able to give him Rs 30,000 for participating in the World Cup event in Russia. I was worried beyond words and I cried because I had no means of providing him the money. Finally, I borrowed the required money from a relative.” She added that she was happy that her son emerged victorious but she’s still concerned about how to return the borrowed money.

Bambam faced several challenges along the way

As a MMA fighter, Bambam’s path has been filled with hindrances. However, he has managed to overcome the odds and trained for at least three to six hours a day.  In the absence of equipment, the 21-year-old used logs and spare tyres to train himself.

Bambam Thounaojam said, “Nobody supports MMA, not even family members. Most people focus on national sports where you have a chance of getting a government job later. I couldn’t participate in some big tournaments earlier as I could not afford the tickets because of financial constraints. I train religiously because I am passionate about this sport.” He added that he even vomited blood once as he couldn’t afford a proper diet.

Bambam Thounaojam does community work

Bambam Thounaojam said he has been deeply affected as he had lost his father due to alcoholism. Bambam is dedicated to making a positive difference in his community. His passion for MMA goes beyond the ring. He and his friends actively work against substance abuse and assist individuals undergoing rehabilitation.

I have been deeply affected as I have lost my father due to alcoholism when I was young.
Together with a friend I work to stop substance and drugs abuse and help addicts undergoing rehabilitations at different centres.”

Despite the challenges and constraints faced by athletes from the state, individuals like Bambam continue to showcase their dedication and passion on both national and international stages.

Recently two ace athletes from the state, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Naorem Roshibina Devi, have been awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award for their exceptional performances in their respective fields.
