Battle of the Baddest – the documentary depicting everything a boxing fan needs to know about one of the biggest fights of 2023- Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou, and while the actual fight created much ruckus, the release of the documentary by the streaming platform has been rather quiet.
Boxing vs. MMA – although the concept of crossover fights in combat sports is nothing new, it gained an unprecedented amount of popularity among fans of both disciplines, and the documentary brings forth a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes of the buildup to Fury vs. Ngannou, all the way to the controversial conclusion of the clash between the heavyweights.
The fight, dubbed “Battle of the Baddest” on which the Netflix documentary namesakes itself, took place at the Boulevard Hall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 28th October 28. It marked the professional boxing debut of Ngannou- the former UFC heavyweight champion, taking on Fury- the reigning WBC heavyweight champion who did not have his belt at stake.
While Fury had been the massive favourite ahead of the fight and was expected to do a clean sweep, Ngannou held his ground solidly, even dropped the Briton to the canvas in setting up a potential upset. However, it was Fury who won the 10-round fight on two out of three judges’ cards, albeit the split decision created much controversy.
Four months following the contest, Netflix has brought forward the documentary, produced by ‘We Go Again’, with none other than Mike Tyson, who trained Ngannou for the fight, sharing the trailer of the documentary on X (formerly Twitter). Check it out below-

With a thematical intro, the one-hour-long documentary opens up on the night of the Fury vs. Ngannou fight, with a memorandum that the bout will “determine who is the baddest man on the planet”.
“From the buildup through fight night, this all-access doc chronicles the boxing showdown between WBC champion Tyson Fury and MMA legend Francis Ngannou.” say the makers of the documentary.
Serving as a backstory to the fight, the film chronicles all those who had been directly involved with the fight, including Mike himself, depicting how all the pieces of the puzzle came together, the puzzle that was to get the two of the most intimidating men in the world together in the same ring.
“Who is the baddest man on the planet? We’re going to find out who it is” – boxing promoter Frank Warren’s POV series as a huge part of the film, while former UFC middleweight champ Israel Adesanya, during a meet and greet with the fans, shares an account of Ngannou’s struggling past back in Africa.
While the fandom looks forward to the actual fight night, there are those who want to delve deeper into the backstory and environment surrounding blockbuster fights, which is often, if not always, a part and parcel of the entire saga of such superfights like Fury vs, Ngannou.
Battle of the Baddest makes an articulated depiction of exactly that- serving the dessert to the main course that had the combat sports fans gripped last October- as well as sets up the hype of Fury vs. Ngannou 2.
Battle of the Baddest is now available to stream on Netflix.
