On the similar lines of the heavyweight division, Bellator has announced a 10 men welterweight tournament.
The news was broken by President Scott Coker at the US launch of the new broadcasting partner of the promotion, DAZN.
Ten of the promotion’s best welterweights will be featured in the bracket, including current champion Rory MacDonald, former champions Douglas Lima and Andrey Koreshkov. The tournament will include three undefeated fighters : striking sensation Michael ‘Venom’ Page, jiu jitsu ace Neiman Gracie, mat specialist Ed Ruth and Ugoslavian “Dynamo” Yaroslav Amosov. Other participants include UFC imports Lorenz Larkin and John Fitch.
According to official statements, a 10th man is yet to be named for the tournament. There will be two play-in matches to determine the final eight men bracket.
The first scheduled pairing of the tournament will be a trilogy bout between rivals Lima and Koreshkov, which will take place at Bellator 205 on Sept. 29 at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The series is currently tied at 1-1, with Koreshkov defeating Lima by unanimous decision to win the Bellator championship in their first meeting, and Lima knocking Koreshkov out in the rematch in November 2016 to get it back.
