Bellator 221 took place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemond, Illinois and in the main event, Brazilian Mixed Martial Artist Patricio Freire became the second Bellator fighter to simultaneously hold titles in two weight division as he knocked out Michael Candler in the first round to win the Bellator lightweight championship.
31-year old Patricio who is the featherweight champion was moving up in the weight class to challenge Chandler for the lightweight title. He became the second fighter after Ryan Bader to hold titles in two different weight classes in Bellator.
But now the newly crowned double champ has challenged the current WBC, IBF, WBA middleweight champion of the world Canelo Alvarez.
“I think I can do well with him,” Freire said. “I watched his last fight, and I believe I can fight him. Now I have two belts. He has a lot of belts, too, and it’s going to be a good match.” (H/T – BJ Penn)
Canelo Alvarez signed a five-year $365 Million deal with DAZN last year and Bellator MMA also has streaming deals with DAZN, so if the management at the DAZN are serious then this fight can be a possibility. However, it’s unlikely that Canelo will fight him as he himself has the lucrative GGG trilogy waiting ahead of him alongside a chance to fight Demetrius Andrade for the undisputed crown.
