Bellator 206 this weekend will feature an impeccable super fight as Bellator welterweight champion Rory ‘Red King’ MacDonald (20-4 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) takes on Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi (44-6-2 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) on September 29 in San Jose, California.
MacDonald will have to move a division up to take on Mousasi. However MacDonald’s coach TriStar head coach Firas Zahabi has tasted success while his fighters were fighting at a higher weight class as George St-Pierre defeated middleweight champion Michael Bisping last November. After Gegard Mousasi, Zahabi proposed an idea which can explode the ceiling of any event.
Speaking with MMA Fighting, Zahabi suggested a unification title bout and a rematch between MacDonald and UFC welterweight champion Tyron ‘The Chosen’ Woodley. (via YouTube):
MacDonald and Woodley first met at UFC 174 back in June, 2014 where MacDonald defeated Woodley via unanimous decision. However, both the fighters have improved leaps and bounds since then and especially with Woodley dominating the welterweight division with four title defenses, the fight certainly makes sense.
Zahabi suggested that the winner gets both the titles. With both of these champions being from different organizations, the materialization of the bout does seem a little difficult. However Zahabi does hope both the organizations negotiate to make this bout a reality.
