Bellator 206 this weekend will feature an impeccable super fight as Bellator welterweight champion Rory ‘Red King’ MacDonald (20-4 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) takes on Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi (44-6-2 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) on September 29 in San Jose, California.

UFC: Will Mousasi’s weight advantage over MacDonald make a difference?

The fight is interesting not only due to the magnitude of a champion vs. champion fight, but also due to how both of these fighters match up against each other. Mousasi being a former light heavyweight has defeated top quality light heavyweights like Ovince St-Preux and Ilir Latifi and also heavyweight Mark Hunt, will definitely carry size advantage over MacDonald. Mousasi weighed in on the topic in an interview with MMAjunkie. (via Twitter):

Mousasi claims he has an advantage of around 10 pounds going into the fight. However, he further added that size advantage won’t add up if the fight stays standing. It will only make a difference if the fight stays on the ground.

However MacDonald holds the record of thirst highest takedowns defence percentage in the history of the UFC with 88.9 percent, behind Woodley (97.6 percent) and Robert Whittaker (90.5 percent). Mousasi also added that if he stays technical in the striking department, it will lead to openings like clinches and takedowns on the mat. Therefore, there is something for both the fighters.
