In a shocking turn of events, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida ended his 11 year old tenure with the UFC to sign with Bellator MMA.
However earlier today it was revealed that UFC tried to match Bellator’s offer, but it was too late by then. According to Bellator’s President Scott Coker, Machida’s contract and negotiation period with the UFC was up, hence Machida’s team contacted him.
In Machida’s own words, Bellator offered him a contract which he simply ‘couldn’t refuse’. For some reason the UFC didn’t offer to match in the allotted time, so Machida signed with Bellator.
“When I came back to the UFC, it was too late because I gave my word to Mr. Coker, and I’m a man of my word”, Machida told MMA Junkie.
“I’m at home here,” said Machida. “I’m very happy, and I can’t wait to step in the cage and fight again.”
