Bellator president Scott Coker said in an interview that the promotion was not interested in a one time deal with Ben Askren in which Askren will fight one fight and retire again.
Ben Askren who is the former One Welterweight Champion was also the Bellator Welterweight Champion in the past. The undefeated Ben Askren recently exchanged words on the social media with the current Bellator Welterweight Champion Rory Macdonald and has expressed interest in a one-off fight against him.
Scott recently talked with ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong and while Coker is not interested in a one fight deal with Askren, he is open to collaboration with one of the Asia’s largest promotions.
“It seems like he has a really, really good program out there in Asia,” Coker said of Sityodtong. “And we talked about that fight and I told him, to be honest to have a one-fight deal with Ben doesn’t really do us much. I wished him luck.”
“I said if [Askren’s status] changes, Chatri, let us know and we said we’ll get together some time soon and maybe we can do some collaborations or we can work together in sharing fighters,” Coker said. “If they need some help, we’re happy to help them. He said the same. So the relationship is good. When I think about the Ben Askren fight, if it was more than one fight, we would be interested.”
Rory’s title defence
Rory Macdonald who was the former title challenger in the UFC, won the Bellator title with a grueling unanimous decision win over Douglas Lima. Rory has since expressed his dissatisfaction with Bellator over the delayed booking of an opponent for his title defence. Coker is planning for an August or September return for Rory with possible opponents including Andrey Koreshkov and the winner of the Paul Daley vs. Jon Fitch fight on Saturday.
“We’ll have a lineup of people ready to fight Rory when the time is right,” Coker said.
