UFC no.3 ranked lightweight contender Beneil Dariush feels that he might face the newly crowned lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in his next fight.
Charles Oliveira became the new lightweight champion by getting a TKO victory over Michael Chandler. They both fought each other at UFC 262 for the vacant lightweight championship after former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.
At UFC 262 in the co-main event, Beneil Dariush defeated Tony Ferguson in a lopsided decision victory. He extended his winning streak to seven after defeating the boogeyman of the division in Ferguson. The fight wasn’t even close and he didn’t give a single opportunity to Tony to change the momentum of the fight. Beneil used his wrestling and grappling skills to nullify Ferguson’s offense. He even locked up an arm-bar which was very tight and the fight was close to being over but Tony somehow managed to take the fight to the decision.
Beneil Dariush thinks he might get the next title shot
UFC lightweight division is arguably the most stacked division with even the no.10 ranked fighter Islam Makachev could be a tough matchup for anyone in the division. After Oliveira defeated Chandler the big question arises that who will he face next for his first title defense.
Conor Mcgregor and Dustin Poirier are both locked up against each other and will fight at UFC 264 in their trilogy fight. Other than them, Tony Ferguson is on a three-fight losing streak who is out of the title contention at the moment. The only top guy left is Justin Gaethje who could be next in line for the champion as he was the last interim champion and the last guy to face Khabib. There are also some fan speculations that Gaethje might face Chandler next.
With all the going on, Beneil Dariush feels that while other guys are busy fighting each other he might get the title shot.
“I think I (have) a real case for the title,” Beneil Dariush told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. “In business numbers, that’s the fight that’s going to get the title shot. But here’s the thing: I’m the only guy with an actual streak in that division. That’s one thing. I have the longest streak in the top three right now. The other thing is these guys don’t get their contracts figured out that quickly. These guys, they’ll fight – I’ve seen contracts fall apart with Dustin and Conor. Things have not worked out for them. So, I’m sitting here and I’m ready to go.”
Beneil Dariush said that he is expecting a child soon and that he won’t be fighting again for a few months but at the same time Charles Oliveira is also not planning to fight soon. So he feels that their timeline could match up perfectly by the end of the year.
“All you’ve got to do is give me a fight at the end of November or December,” Dariush said. “That’s all I’m saying. It’s not that far off. I’m sure Charles is going to want a break to celebrate in Brazil and do his thing. So, I’m here.”
“I’ve already thought about it before,” Dariush said of facing Oliveira. “I don’t know if you remember, but I was already matched up with this guy a few times. I’ve thought about how I would fight him, I’ve thought about how I would get after him, and I think it’ll be pretty exciting. I think people would really like it.”
