Former UFC Lightweight Champion and WEC Lightweight Champion, Benson Henderson has made his pick for the greatest UFC lightweight champion and it is not Khabib Nurmagomedov, instead, he has gone with BJ Penn. Benson Henderson currently competes in the Bellator’s lightweight roster. He is the no.3 ranked Bellator fighter at the moment. He has also fought for the Bellator lightweight championship and lost both of those title fights. He left UFC in 2016 and then decided to join Bellator and went on to be their top lightweight prospect and is still competing at the top of the division.
In one of his recent interviews, Benson Henderson shared his thought on the UFC’s lightweight division and he also gave his point of view on who he feels might be the greatest UFC lightweight champion. As he was once the UFC lightweight champion he knows how tough it was to compete against the best of the best in the UFC.
“Who cares about my opinion?” Benson Henderson told MMA Mania. “But I’m not gonna put Khabib up there for the greatest ever of all time. You can maybe consider him one of the greats for 155, but as far as one of the greatest of all-time in all weight classes, Nah. You might have to miss me on that one. That’s saying something. Greatest of all time, I think there are a good 10 or 15 above him. I’m one of those purists who are about longevity as well. Somebody who has been there and competed at the top level. Not somebody who is 35-0 but only has really 10 fights against the top-level guys.”
“For me, BJ Penn is the greatest lightweight of all time. He’s up there for one of the greatest fighters of all weight classes, period. All-time. He did it against the best in the world, at the time they were the best in the world. You can’t complain about he didn’t fight this guy or that guy. At the time that he was fighting, in his heyday, he was fighting the best in the world and he was putting them away. For me, BJ is up there…”
Both Khabib and BJ Penn have their legacy and impact on the UFC. BJ Penn was one of the best fighters in the UFC and had a dominant run in the UFC across several weight classes. But BJ Penn went off to face a huge downfall in the latter part of his career. Whereas Khabib Nurmagoemdov retired as the undefeated undipsy=uted UFC Lightweight champion with a record of 29-0 as a pro-MMA fighter.
Benson Henderson is scheduled to face Brent Primus on October 16, 2021, at Bellator 268.
