BJ Penn’s team release statement on street fight footage

B-J-Penn

A representative of UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn has said that the UFC fighter was not the one to instigate the fight. The brawl being referred to was the one that surfaced after a couple of videos were released by TMZ Sports.

Gary Levitt, a longtime friend of the Penn family, told MMA Junkie that Penn was attacked by a man before taking a punch in a video that showed him getting knocked out.

“I spoke to B.J., and B.J.’s like, ‘No, I did nothing,’” Levitt said.

In the first video that came into light, the former UFC champion was seen barraging the man with punches, before being forced to separate by security at the Lava Shack bar in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. The man in question told TMZ that the altercation started after he was hit with a “cheap shot”. Consequently he was forced to retaliate.

However, Penn’s friend remembers the incident differently. He said the first video shows what happened immediately after Penn was attacked. He was not able to recall the entire string of events. However, what he inferred was that Penn didn’t do anything wrong.

“He said the guy punched him, and many, many people saw it, and (the guy) punched him again, and he went, ‘Stop, what are you doing?’” Levitt said.

“And he said (the man) must have punched him at least four times, and some people are saying it was more like seven or eight times. B.J. did not do anything, meaning (he) didn’t fight back. He was just backing up and saying, ‘Hey.’”

The police arrived later on the scene. However, by then everyone had dispersed. As a result, no complaint was filed.

“Everybody had dispersed, and the people that were standing around there didn’t know anything about anything,” Hawaii Police Department spokesperson Alan Richman said. “But apparently B.J. Penn was somehow involved in the disturbance. That’s all I really have.”
