In a recent interview on SiriusXM, Teddy Atlas referred to Gennady Golovkin as “overrated”.
Apparently, Abel Sanchez got wind of the same, and came to the defense of his star pupil Golovkin.
Gennady Golovkin is widely regarded as one of the top Middleweight pugilists in the world today. In fact, the Kazakhstani KO artist, trained by Sanchez, is regarded by many as one of the all-time greats.
Regardless, renowned boxing trainer and ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas—who’s well-known for his controversial comments on all things pertaining to the sweet science—seemingly disagrees with the vast majority of the fight game’s pundits.
Speaking to Randy Gordon & Gerry Cooney, Atlas asserted that although he feels Golovkin should’ve been awarded the decision instead of the latter’s first fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez being scored a draw; he feels Canelo beats Golovkin and makes it look easy this time around.
Atlas explained that Canelo may have held back in his offense the first time around, as he wasn’t sure whether he could handle Golovkin’s size and strength, however, Canelo enters the rematch with more confidence and easily bests Triple G when they do battle later this year.
Additionally, Teddy Atlas went as far as calling Gennady Golovkin overrated—
“Golovkin is a guy who’s starting to slip…I said this before it was popular to say, that he was an overrated guy. I said it on your air, you guys jumped all over me!”

In reference to the same, Michael Woods of Badlefthook, spoke to Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez regarding Atlas’ comments, in response to which Sanchez explained—
“Atlas is the one who is overrated, always has been. Finally ESPN took the blindfolds and ear plugs off to clearly see and hear that…Opinions are easy to offer, look at the ones before the first fight…The bottom line is, the fight proved who was best and the public knows what the score should have been. Those opinions are irrelevant, and people like Teddy Atlas and Adelaide Byrd seem to use a beautiful and dangerous sport to make themselves relevant.”
Irrespective of all the banter and differing opinions regarding Golovkin, boxing fans can rest assured that the score will be settled later this year, as Canelo vs. Golovkin 2 takes place on May 5th.
