Canelo Alvarez may not fight Gennady Golovkin in their protracted rematch on May 5th, this year.

And this has to do with Alvarez testing positive for Clenbuterol on two separate tests conducted on February 17th and 21st.

However, Alvarez is claiming that he did not ingest any banned substances knowingly and that the trace amount of Clenbuterol found in his system can be attributed to tainted beef he consumed in Mexico.

As far as studies go, it has been proven in the past that many slaughterhouses in Mexico use Clenbuterol on their cattle to grow them out, making Canelo’s reason for failing the drug test quite plausible.

However, as veteran combat sports reporter Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports surmises, Canelo has to prove that he did consume tainted meat in order for him to receive the all clear to face Golovkin on May 5th.

Iole also references how 4 out of the 5 cases pulled up for Clenbuterol in the UFC, which is under the much stricter USADA testing agency, were also let off without any penalty when they proved ingestion of tainted meat.

Watch the video where he explains the situation in detail, below:

The first bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was adjudged to be a draw on September 17th, 2017, prompting massive dissent in the boxing world, as many saw Golovkin getting the nod.

However, one particular judge that earned the ire of the entire fraternity was Adelaide Byrd, who scored the fight 118-110 to Canelo.

Eventually, a rematch was booked between the two for May 5th.

We await further developments from Canelo’s end to see if he can prove his innocence, before knowing for sure whether the bout will take place.
