Chris Eubank Jr will reportedly replace George Groves in the World Boxing Super Series final. Eubank Jr was beaten by Groves in the semi-final as the WBA super-middleweight champ outpointed his rival. But despite the victory, Groves suffered a shoulder injury in the fight and has had to go under the knife.
He has been battling hard to be ready in time to face fellow Brit Callum Smith but appears to have lost his race.
The Times report WBSS chiefs have finally lost patience with Groves and will instead call on Eubank Jr to contest the final.
An announcement is expected over the next week to give Eubank Jr time to prepare for the bout against his domestic rival. Groves needed surgery in the immediate aftermath of the fight but persuaded bosses to put the final back from June to July.
However, he still looks unlikely to be fully fit in time for the scrap, which looks set to take place in Manchester. Groves will keep his WBA strap and is understood to be in talks to face the winner of the Eubank Jr vs Smith fight.
The winner of WBSS should fight David Benavidez or Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez.
