WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez will return to action July 28 on the undercard of the likely Mikey Garcia-Robert Easter Jr lightweight unification bout, to be aired live on Showtime. According to sources in Mexico his opponent will be Matt Korobov. Benavidez is coming off of a dominating victory in his rematch with Ronald Gavril in February where he won a decisive unanimous decision.
Korobov (28-1, 14KOs) who was a standout amateur is riding a four-fight win streak since with his most recent victory coming back in March over Jonathan Batista. His only loss came at the hands of Andy Lee back in December 2014. It’s also worth noting that he has a victory over current IBF interim super middleweight champion Jose Uzcategui.
At 35 years of age one has to wonder if he can test the young powerful champion and make the most out of this title opportunity.
Matt Korobov never reached his expectations as a pro, he beat Kovalev in the amateurs and had a tremendous amateur career but Andy Lee derailed his pro career, a win v David Benavidez is perfect opportunity to put himself back on the map and also for David Benavidez to establish himself as a force in the division.
