WBA and WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin have verbally agreed to a third fight.
Canelo Alvarez was scheduled to fight WBO super middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders, on May 2. But the fight has been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Cinco De Mayo weekend is a signature month for a Canelo Alvarez fight as he has been fighting on that date for many years now.
The news was first reported by Lance Pugmire of The Athletic.
Canelo’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions want to hold the third fight at the AT&T Stadium. This stadium is situated in Dallas and has a capacity of seating 100,000 fans. The date planned for the trilogy is set for Sept. 12 which also falls on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
While the Saunders fight is still not cancelled and it could be pushed to June. However, if the fight doesn’t fall through in June as well, then Canelo will opt to fight GGG in September.
Canelo and GGG have a long rivalry. Both fighters genuinely dislike each other and have often expressed it publicly. The pair have fought twice before. The first fight ended in a controversial draw and in the second fight Canelo scored a victory over GGG via a majority decision.
According to The Athletic, Canelo didn’t want to fight GGG for the third time, but after meeting DAZN executives he agreed to the trilogy but only after they sweetened his $35 Million/fight deal. Canelo signed an exclusive 11-fight deal with DAZN in late 2018 for a record $365 Million. So far he has completed three-fights under the DAZN deal.
Golovkin also signed a six-fight deal with DAZN for $100 Million. He has had two-fights under the new deal. He was scheduled to fight Poland’s Kamil Szeremeta , but the fight was delayed after Golovkin suffered a calf-injury.
