Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will defend his titles against Gennady Golovkin on September 17 on DAZN pay-per-view. For the first time in his professional boxing career spanning sixteen years, Gennady Golovkin will be fighting in the super-middleweight division.
For the longest time, Gennady Golovkin had dominated the middleweight division and now he has the chance to capture the super-middleweight title in his first outing in the weight class. Canelo Alvarez is moving down from the light heavyweight division, where he suffered a loss against Dmitry Bivol at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin trilogy to take place on Mexican Independence Day
Canelo and Golovkin have shared the ring twice before and it has been five years since the first fight that took place in 2017. In that fight, Canelo and GGG battled to a controversial draw and in the rematch, Canelo Alvarez secured a close decision win over the Kazakh boxer.
“I feel very happy and proud to be able to give the best fights and this fight won’t be an exception“, said Alvarez.
Golovkin added: “I hope to see you on September 17“.
“The Canelo vs. GGG trilogy is the biggest fight in boxing and I am delighted to get this made for September 17,” said Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing.
“These are two men that bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO. I truly believe this will be the most thrilling fight between these two great champions and will be fireworks from the first bell to the last man standing.”
Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso said: “Let’s push ahead without going backwards. A Mexican never surrenders, let’s push forward.”
The Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin trilogy will stream for Indian fans on DAZN.
