Alexander Volkanovski, the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion believes he needs to defeat longtime rival Max Holloway for a third time at UFC 276 to become the greatest of all time in the division. However, Chael Sonnen begs to differ, as he believes the Aussie is already the G.O.A.T at 145.

With only one professional career defeat, Volkanovski has remained undefeated in the Octagon and has defended his Featherweight title three times. In his title reign, he has defeated Holloway twice- first winning the belt from him at UFC 245, followed by the rematch at UFC 251.

Now, the Aussie MMA fighter, who has opened up about a future return to lightweight, will face “Blessed” for the third time at UFC 276 and recently, “The Great” emphasized that to become the greatest in the division, he needs to secure a third win over Holloway.

“You got to beat a guy three times to be the GOAT?” Chael Sonnen calls Volkanovski’s statement silly

However, Chael Sonnen begs to differ from the notion. In a recent episode on his YouTube channel, Sonnen opined that Volkanovski has already made it to the greatest ever status and defeating Holloway in the trilogy won’t be that decorative to his superb career.

“Volkanovski just said, ‘With a win on July 2 over Max Holloway, I become the G.O.A.T of 145 pounds.’ I love it and I’m so impressed by it because he’s talking about being a champion who’s hungry. He thinks he has something else to prove. He has another goal he doesn’t believe is done yet. That’s where he’s wrong,” said Sonnen, “The G.O.A.T of 145 pounds is Volkanovski. Going out and beating the guy that you’ve already beaten twice, that’s just a silly statement. You got to beat a guy three times to be the GOAT? That makes no kind of sense.” [H/T Sportskeeda]
