Michael Chandler has been active since Khabib’s retirement due to a variety of reasons. There’s a reason to believe that the much-awaited rematch between Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier could well be for the vacant lightweight championship.

However, not according to UFC’s new signing and former two-time Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler. The fighter believes a four-man tournament alongside McGregor, Poirier, and Tony Ferguson is the right way to determine the next title contender.

Khabib Nurmagomedov stepped down as the lightweight champion, announcing his retirement from the sport after his emphatic win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. ‘The Eagle’ retired undefeated as the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. It’s safe to say that Nurmagomedov will go down as one of the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. However, the question remains- Who will fight for the vacant belt after Khabib?

Recently, Conor McGregor took to Twitter to congratulate Khabib Nurmagomedov on an incredible career. He added that he will “carry on.” McGregor’s comments could have been regarding Khabib’s decision to retire in the wake of McGregor’s hugely anticipated comeback to the UFC.

Michael Chandler served as the back-up fighter for Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. After Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement, it remains to be seen who will content for the undisputed lightweight gold.

Chandler wants 4-way tournament for the lightweight championship

I am excited to be part of the UFC lightweight division right now at the top when there is no UFC lightweight champion. We will see what’s next, Chandler said.

Speaking about a potential showdown against former interim champion Tony Ferguson, Chandler indicated that his eyes are set on Justin Gaethje as well.

Chandler

You know I did Tony Ferguson’s name and we are talking about January. However, we have Justin Gaethje in here talking about eight weeks from tonight to fight for a title.

“I am not gonna come in and say that. ‘Hey guys, I deserve a title shot.’ I would love my name to be thrown into the mix. I would love the opportunity to fight. A four-man tournament for the title, there are all kinds of different things that UFC can do, he added.

It will be interesting to see what lies ahead for the UFC’s lightweight division. However, it’s hard not to agree with Michael Chandler. Looking at the current situation, a four-man tournament seems to be the perfect way to determine the next title challengers.
