Coach says Charles Oliveira has no interest in fighting Nate Diaz

UFC top lightweight Charles Oliveira’s coach has stated that the fighter has no interest in fighting the UFC superstar Nate Diaz who recently called him out.

Nate Diaz says he’s ready to return to the octagon, but there are some caveats involved. Diaz hasn’t competed since his doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 244 in November 2019. One of the most popular fighters in the UFC has two opponents in mind for his return to action, which would include Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira.

“Dustin Poirier was supposed to fight me anyway and he didn’t make it. He pulled his ass out,” Diaz said. “I don’t think he wants to [fight me], no. He may say he does but I don’t think he does because I’m not gonna play nice guy with him like Conor McGregor just did with him. I think a fight with me would be a more serious situation for him and I don’t think he could sleep with that.”

If the fight with Poirier can’t come together, there was another surging 155er that has caught Diaz’s eye, Charles. Diaz was impressed with Oliveira’s recent win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 256.

“That’s the guy right there. I’ll fight that guy,” Diaz said of Oliveira. “I like the winners. I want to fight winners because I ain’t lost to nobody. I like the Oliveira fight or the Dustin Poirier fight.”

Charles Oliveira won’t be fighting Diaz anytime soon

Charles is on the heels of an eight-fight win streak, Oliveira is one of the top-three ranked lightweights on the UFC roster right now. With UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov set to retire at any point, the Brazilian has made it clear that he believes he should be fighting for the vacant title.

While Diaz vs. Oliveira would be a fun fight for the fans, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon. Speaking to AG Fight, Oliveira’s coach Diego Lima said Oliveira’s sole focus right now is on fighting for the UFC lightweight title next.

“To be honest, it is a fight that theoretically makes no sense to us. Nate is not active, much less ranked. It is a fight that would only happen for financial reasons. But even so, I don’t think it would be beneficial for us at this point. We know that McGregor sells a lot. Really who he faces sells well. Nate is not at that level. Our goal is the belt. Even if it is very financially worthwhile, today I do not see this struggle adding to Charles’ career. The goal is only one, the lightweight title,” Lima said of his pupil.

With Nurmagomedov set for another meeting with UFC president Dana White at month’s end, we should start to have more clarity about the future of the lightweight belt very soon, a belt that Oliveira will do anything to fight for. Just don’t expect him to accept a fight with Diaz anytime soon, even for the money.
