Chris Weidman says Israel Adesanya is just another Anderson Silva, predicts stoppage win

The former middleweight champion Chris Weidman has potentially called out the current undefeated middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

Israel Adesanya has just defended his title in a very impressive manner against the top contender Paulo Costa at UFC 253, where Adesanya stopped Costa in round two getting the win by TKO. Right after the fight, Adesanya showed interest in fighting the winner of Jared Cannonier and Robert Whittaker.

Suddenly a new fighter has called out Adesanya. Weidman (15-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC), who was also once an unbeaten 185-pound champion, put his name into the conversation to fight “The Last Stylebender.” Weidman a former middleweight champion, has stacked up one of the best resumes in the division’s history. Although he’s recently struggled, losing six of his past eight, Weidman thinks that stylistically he’s a tough matchup for Adesanya.

I think that’s a tailor-made matchup for me,” Weidman said in an interview with Chael Sonnen. “Those athletic strikers – tall, lanky guys – I’ve proven that I can beat. I think pressure, wrestling, heavy punches, and kicks – just nonstop pressure is what you need to beat them. That’s the recipe that beats those guys. I’ve proved that with Anderson Silva twice, (and) Uriah Hall (is) another one. Those guys are in trouble against me.”

“I think that’s an exciting fight to make,” Weidman said. “If you look up and down the rankings, I don’t think there are too many other fights that are going to excite people the way our narratives could work and what I bring to the table. It’s not any (expletive), it’s just facts.

“If you’re into MMA and you understand the game, you look at my game, you know I present some serious trouble for Adesanya, and more than anybody’s ever had in the past. He hasn’t fought any great, accoladed wrestlers other than Yoel Romero, who doesn’t use his wrestling, so I don’t even count that. I’m the type of guy that will bring that pressure, and I will take him down and I’ll rag doll him on the floor.”

Weidman doubled down on Friday, claiming on social media that the matchup would be an easy fight for him and an easy ‘payday’.

“Heyyy I just realized I have 2 common opponents with Adesanya…Gastelum who I finished. Then Silva who I finished twice. Adesanya squeaked by decisions on both of those guys… Adesanya is just another Silva without the black belt in Jitsu. Easy”

Adesanya, who has been extremely active online since his win, stoking the flame of feuds with Costa and Jon Jones, turned his focus to Weidman after the latest message.

He bluntly told Weidman, who has just two wins in his past seven fights and is coming off a narrow victory over Omari Akhmedov at UFC on ESPN+ 33 in August, that he needs to get more positive results before a showdown would be realistic.

“Chris Weidman… get some wins first, please. I already have you figured out. I’ve sized you up a few times. Watched you hit and miss I know how to fuck up your single and double leg attacks I’m 10 steps ahead like I said. I knew I would use this clip one day to prove that I knew!”

Chris and Israel went back and forth against each other on twitter.

“You were very nice to my face that night to be talking like that on your phone. Two-faced as hell! I would grab your weak ass and crush you! YOU remember our interactions that night and YOU know this is a problem you don’t want”
