Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman says UFC is trying to get rid of fighters who get paid a lot of money.

In recent times, UFC has released Anderson Silva, Yoel Romero, Corey Anderson, Anthony Johnson etc from their respective UFC contracts. UFC president Dana White even went on to say that as many as 60 fighters including the well-known veterans could be let go from the promotion by the end of the month.

While Dana White insisted that the cuts were purely based on performance and not money, Robert Whittaker doesn’t think that is the case.

In an interview with James Lynch, Chris Weidman added that UFC is getting rid of veterans who earned a lot of money in the UFC for the rookies who come in for a lot cheaper.

It’s unprecedented that they’re letting guys go with fights on their contract. It really does put everybody in a position, if you’re in the UFC, like, ‘Oh crap.’ If you’re not winning right now, especially if you’re getting paid a lot of money, it looks like they’re trying to get rid of you and bring these younger guys up who they aren’t paying as much money. It started with (Anderson Silva) and then you saw it with Yoel Romero,” Weidman said.

It was always just a thing, if you had fought on your contract, that is a position for the UFC where you can’t go somewhere else and make money. So you always wanted a little less fights on your contract, that was part of the negations. And now it seems like they’re actually letting guys go with tons of fights on their contracts,” Chris Weidman said.

Chris Weidman says Anderson Silva will find a new home

Chris Weidman also opened up on the release of Anderson Silva. The pair have previously fought on two different occasions. The pair fought for the first time in 2013 at UFC 162 and in that fight, Chris Weidman knocked out Silva in the second round.

The pair fought in a rematch at UFC 168, where Silva lost via TKO after suffering from a gruelling leg injury. However, now following Silva’s release, Weidman is confident that the Brazilian legend will sign with another promotion.

I think he fights if he wants to fight, yeah. Someone’s going to give him money to fight. He may not be getting the money he wants. It seems like the free-agency market isn’t really in the best place right now, probably due to corona and everything,” Weidman said. (H/T – BJPenn.com)
