The mixed martial arts community has been hit with a piece of saddening news as Christian Lubenga, a 27-year-old MMA fighter who had just made his debut as an amateur, lost his life in the hospital, just two days after his first fight.
The cause of Christian Lubenga’s death is yet to be known
Christian Lubenga made his amateur debut at AMMO Fight League: Battle of St. Patrick’s which took place at the Mallary Complex, located at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts on 12th March.
Lubenga had faced another amateur debutant Cody McCracken at the event, and lost the fight via technical knockout in the third round. Soon after the fight, Lubenga had to be rushed to the hospital, where he sadly passed away.
The cause of the death is yet to be known, as McCracken was not violent towards the end of the bout. The death of Lubenga was confirmed by Hampden County District Attorney Spokesman Jim Leydon. An autopsy will be conducted to find out the cause of his death.
Lubenga, a father, was fighting out of Black Wolf Martial Arts gym in Orange, Connecticut. The sad demise of the fighter has come as a shock tro his family, teammates and trainers. Soon after the news of his death was aired, the gym released a statement on Instagram lamenting the saddening incident, along with a short clip in memory of Lubenga.
“We are at a loss of words. This is what a nightmare looks like…. It can’t even be properly articulated with words and on a social media post nonetheless. We wanted to give the family some time to make their own decisions about how to go public with this before we spoke on it out of respect. While we ourselves are grieving and it’s difficult to even type this out we felt it appropriate to take a moment to say a few things.” the statement from Black Wolf Martial Arts read.
“Christian wasn’t just any student. Christian was the kind of human who brought life and light into any room he walked into. Christian was our family. We shared laughs, stories, blood, sweat, tears. He’s the kind of person I aspire to be like and I wish more people were like him. Polite, professional, humble, always kind to everyone no matter what. We spent hundreds of thousands of hours together doing the things we were passionate about. Christian was a true martial artist in every aspect of the word and a true warrior. We love you Christian. We all love you.” the statement added. [H/T Fall River Reporter]
